Depth Buffer Based Registration of Free-Form Surfaces

چکیده
Many algorithms have to deal with multiple representations of the same object. The process of aligning these representations is called registration. In this paper we present a new approach for the registration of free-form surfaces which is not based on finding closest points. Instead, our algorithm takes advantage of the graphics hardware and uses the depth buffer for determining the distance between the surfaces. We show the efficiency of our approach in several examples in two different application areas, the registration of range images from the same object and the nominal value comparison for spherical lenses.

Although, most of the abnormal structures of human brain do not alter the shape of outer envelope of brain (surface), some abnormalities can deform the surface extensively. However, this may be a major problem in a surface-based registration technique, since two nearly identical surfaces are required for surface fitting process. A type of verification known as the circularity check for th...
متن کاملFast Global Registration of 3D Sampled Surfaces using a Multi-Z-Buffer Technique
We present a new method for the global registration of several overlapping 3D surfaces sampled on an object. The method is based on the ICP algorithm and on a segmentation of the sampled points in an optimized set of z-buffers. This multi-z-buffer technique provides a 3D space partitioning which greatly accelerates the search of the nearest neighbours in the establishment of the point-to-point ...

ÐThis paper introduces a new free-form surface representation scheme for the purpose of fast and accurate registration and matching. Accurate registration of surfaces is a common task in computer vision. The proposed representation scheme captures the surface curvature information (seen from certain points) and produces images, called asurface signatures,o at these points. Matching signatures o...
متن کاملRecognition of Closed-Form and Free-Form Surfaces from Minimal Tactile Data
This paper presents a method for recognition of 3D objects with curved surfaces from “one-dimensional” tactile data. For every surface model in a given database, a lookup table is constructed to store the principal curvatures pre-computed at points of discretization over the surface. To recognize an object, a robot hand with touch sensing capability obtains data points on its surface along thre...
